MS.LONGKUMER MAPS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘A BITCH’ AND ‘THE BITCH’

Bitch is a very hyped word. We use it in parties, in bathrooms and bedrooms, electronic and telephonic conversations, in cafĂ©, in theaters, in parks, in offices, in shops and the list goes on except inside a church or a high worship place. But, the question is not what is ‘bitch’, after all everyone knows the literal meaning of it- ha ha ha female dog, but the thought is what is the difference between ‘a bitch’ and ‘the bitch’? To explain it in my own language, I will start it off with some illustrations. It is the day of your exam, say calculus exam, and all you know is your name. The colour of the ink is black, yet it is of no luck to you, you are so perplexed, you feel so shitty, to your rescue the girl/ guy beside you is the next Albert Einstein, what will you do? If you are going to plagiarize what she/he wrote then you are ‘a bitch’, but if you scribble in bold letters ‘Frankly, I don’t know. You can kill me’, then you are ‘The Bitch’, because you are so Original. You can proceed from here.  

 

So again the contradiction,


Boyfriend stealers are often labeled ‘Bitch’ by doing so we are narrowing the meaning of the word. If you know a boyfriend (belonging to someone) who is so miserable, really so, who weeps whole night just to be free from the clutches of a monstrous girlfriend. If you happen to meet that type of boyfriend in quiet little place or in the loudest of crowd, your eyes clicked, your smiles flicked and you became so hitched, then in that case, you are a boyfriend rescuer, that way you are ‘The Bitch’. But, if you have tons of guys hovering around you like bees over a flower yet you steals the boyfriend of a meek sweet soul, just by flashing out your lactose box, in that case you are ‘a bitch’, really you are. One advice to ‘a bitch’, be for the needy and don’t be a greedy.

 

Enter the dragon, there comes the lady boss who is so hard to deal with. She is blunt; she on your face, your Fashion TV type of opinion is structured into National Geography when she enters the broad room. She is so secured of what to wear, how to walk and what to do that she never asks for anyone’s opinion except her own. Gorgeous when she wears the crinkled designer scarf but ugly when she throws her weight on you. She means business, she has no time for gossiping, her yes is yes, and her no is no. Everyone hates her, but everyone respects her. She does not cry in front of anyone for she does not want to let people know that they have the power to hurt her, she is called devil, heartless yet she secretly pays the medical bills of her workers, she gives lift to her office’s watchman, she does not shout at the female worker who had over extended her maternity leave. I call that boss ‘The Bitch’. Then there is this lady who thinks that she is the first among the equals but she maintains her false modesty, she hardly notices your cares but compliments you where you do not deserve, out of Freudian slip she says that she is an angel incarnate but when you stare at her, she corrects herself by saying ‘Just kidding’. No matter what little or big thing you do for her, she will hardly remember it but if she does something miserably great then she will pen down in her dairy to refer back until her dying day. She is selfish by nature, when angry she calls on name (even racist slangs), she cannot tolerate hearing compliments about other girls. She thinks that whatever she did was right, so she never ask for forgiveness (come on, how can she be always right), but still she goes on to say, “I am the best human being on this earth.”  She is so artificial, super plastic. Hallelujah! May ‘The Bitch’ meet this ‘a bitch’.

 



Man can be a bitch and The Bitch? A bitch is the man in whose eyes you see a rascal soul, who pretends that he really cares for you, but in real he sees you as an object of his play. A bitch is a molester, a rapist, a wife beater, a harasser, a psychotic boyfriend who clings on you like a summer odor, who suffocates you, he takes away your pride, your existence, your creativity, in short who takes away you from yourself, and he never creates memories only commits sins. A bitch is the person who never wants to learn from his mistakes, he is a person of ingratitude, selfish and intolerance; he comes into our lives like a gentle soul and turns out to be the under-covered fallen angel. Do all the good to him, he will never be satisfied; he will be like a parasite sucking your blood in and out till you turn formless, and the worse is when he will keep you in a state of illusion. He makes you suicidal; he draws out the murderous instinct from you. You will love to hate him over and over again till he dies. 

 

On the other room, The Bitch is one who has the courage to say no when you are wrong, you will hate him like crazy for he has the guts to say the truth on your face. The Bitch is the one whose spirits cannot be tamed, he cannot be sold or bought, he does not pretend, he does not cheat; he is sometimes boringly optimistic, but always loyal. He may be hated, but without his love someone will be half a human. Mr. The Bitch, he is man of integrity, he is real, never pretends what he is not, he is a giver but ask nothing in return, you will be blessed to love him, and every day you will learn to love him more and more. You will learn from him that it is not a shameful thing to admit your mistakes and that life is all about learning from thyself and from others. He is everything which a bitch is not. He is the man of all seasons, he is a leader yet he is a follower, he is everything that makes you say, he is 'The Bitch'. He will teach you how to take care of yourself and will teach you never to give up…and he is one of the reason why I feel encouraged to keep on blogging. 

Don’t forget Karma, she will hunt you down. But guess what? The mother of all ‘The Bitch’ is Karma, in simple words the concept of what goes around comes back around. And if you think she is not The Bitch then I encourage you do have a rendezvous with her, she will take you for a wild ride, you never know how she will devour upon you, she will hit you in the most painful place, your heart. So, I say The Bitch will rule no matter what, and a bitch will keep on wondering and wondering why the sky is blue and the grass is green and the sun shines from east….meanwhile The Bitch will continue to be the phenomenal.

GENDER SENSITIZATION AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN CAMPUSES: ROLE OF THE STUDENT'S COMMUNITY



* Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment, or GSCASH, Jawaharlal Nehru University, had started functioning from its present office space since October 2001. This essay won the first prize in M.Phil/Ph.D level essay competition conducted by the GSCASH.*

 
In India, the layman’s understanding of sexual harassment is, ‘eve teasing, unwelcome sexual gesture or behaviour whether directly or indirectly as sexually colored remarks; physical contact and advances; showing pornography; a demand or request for sexual favors; any other unwelcome physical, verbal/ non-verbal conduct being sexual in nature. The critical factor is the unwelcomeness of the behaviour, thereby making the impact of such actions on the recipient more relevant rather than intent of the perpetrator’.  The definition of sexual harassment can be broader than what we have known. The degree of punishment to accuse varies from country to country. In India, the ‘Vishakha guidelines’ gave an awareness to check sexual harassment in working places. However, the problem of sexual harassment is yet to be plucked out, infact over the years its impact has so much increase that several institutions are coming up with various measures to combat it.

The awareness so far
                         The sole aim of colleges and universities is to bring about a harmonious development between an individual’s intellect and personality. Campuses, whether residential or non residential are meant for providing learning, working and homely environments. All members of academic communities pursue their studies and research work in a liberal way best suited for them. However, the malady of ‘sexual harassment’, in someway has acted like a stumbling block in erecting the pillar of progress.

For sometime the problem of sexual harassment was treated as confidential. However, with the growth of awareness of this issue, the victims came forward with a bold stand against it; this step taken by the victims acted like bacon of light for the other victims who had shelled themselves in the darkness of despair.  By 1980s, onwards the problems of sexual harassment in campuses gained its cheap popularity, so the universities armed up with effective measures and attention were focused on this problem.

Forms of sexual harassment in campuses can be take place in the following way. Unwelcome sexual advances, sexist remark, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, unwanted jokes, sending vulgar emails or text messages. An intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment is created when individual's employment is made on the basis of submission to or rejection of such conduct, and when such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work performance.

Irrespective of gender, both male and female in the academic community can be victims of unwanted sexual behavior; however it was to be noticed that the majority of complainants were from female students, faculty, and staff. Through the complaints, it was brought to notice that whether they where in undergraduate or research programme female students were harassed either by their supervisor, classmates or other male students. Academics are seen as male dominated arena so women are overwhelmingly the targets of sexual harassment; this is believed to be one of the reasons for such indecent behaviour from man. The cause of such activity some believe arises because of power structures and cultural biases within the academy

Role of the student’s community in gender sensitizing and combating sexual harassments in campuses
The power of the student’s unity is not to be underestimated.  For decades changes were brought in our society through their active participation, their strength is undeniable. Through proper awareness the student’s community can voluntarily organize themselves to pluck the evil seed of ‘sexual harassment in the campuses’.

A student as an individual must set an example in eliminating gender inequities among all segments of the academic community and respect each others choice and preferences. The students’ community in whole should promote mutual cooperation, equity, and care among students of different class, caste, race, sex and religion.

The mind set that breeds the superiority complex over the other, looking down towards a particular gender as inferior, creates problem in controlling sexual harassment in campuses. Women are generally looked upon as a prey to satisfy the sexual appetite; some of the maniacs cannot take no for an answer, they keep on pestering and pursuing until they achieve their desired goal. Here, what the student’s community can do is of crucial importance. If only they can pick out the anti-social agent, if only they can hand him over to the respective legal authority, or put him for therapy; then the problem will cease like butter in a hot surface, however it is easy said than done.

Student’s community can highlight the issues through the public talks, distribution of pamphlets, posters, write ups in college magazines. Student’s community can bring up policies, procedures, extensive training programs, and materials that seek to identify and prevent sexual harassment and promoted conferences and seminars addressing the problem. They can stage the issues of sexual harassment, and for effective participation they can organize literary competitions under this theme. 

Students who are sexually harassed are often so confused, worried, or angry that they do not know what to do. Therefore a professional counselor should be employed in the campus; the student’s community should support the victim in best possible way whether in giving legal help or emotional courage.

Prevention is better than cure; therefore the student’s community should come up with a solid proposal and draft rules and regulations to punish the offender. Sexual harassment cells should come up in the campus where the victims can place their complaints; so, that such anti-social acts will be controlled to some extent.  

Some universities in India like Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University had been strong in avenging sexual harassment, and they have been successful in grabbing the problem. The credited however is equally shared between the students and the faculty members who vigorously voiced out when support was needed.

A join endeavour
                         Much is done but much has to be done. In spreading awareness of the sexual harassment in the campuses people often expect a lot from the students’ community however it is a combined endeavor. The society at large should come forward in combating the problem of sexual harassment for a better tomorrow.


 

POVERTY- PARADOX OF INDIA'S DEVELOPMENT STORY

Introduction

                 Development has been one of the most powerful quests shaping the social and economic structures in India. When India got independence in 1947, it had to keep into consideration the following things:- planning, growth, growth with equity, basic needs, participation, appropriate technology, alternative development, sustainability, liberalization, good governance, social capital, and indigenous knowledge.[1] However, above all these things stood development as the shibboleth in the post independence era, the tools for development were large and varied however the basic criteria for measuring it was whether India could stand face to face with the developed countries of the Western World. The First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru whose vision was based on a historical and international perspective became scientifically attached to the socialist model of planning which was inspired from the former Soviet Union but achieved State led capitalism. 

Development was seen as the index of a desired modernity, it was throughout implicated in a political discourse of national statism. In all location, development came to be marked by the specific combinations of state projects aimed at growth, achievement of cultural unity and coherent political forms. For Nehru and his group development in India could be brought only by the tool of planning. Planning was considered as a mighty cooperative effort of all the people of India. Nehru hoped that the new projects would be solvent to dissolve the division of caste and religion, community and region. He somehow believed this in a way could deal with the separatism, provincialism and sectarianism that India longed to combat.

However, after six decades of independence the problem of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and poor infrastructure still prevails. Year after year policies, plans and programmes are introduced and implemented yet the result is gradual. Somewhere down the line there might be something which needs to be addressed, let us look into the way poverty is understood and tackled in our country.

Poverty: meaning, causes and some measures which were adopted
Layman’s understanding of poverty can be, “Poverty is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute or destitution refers to being unable to afford minimum human needs, which commonly includes education, healthcare, providence of freshwater, clothing and shelter”.[2] Furthermore, for World Bank, “Poverty is pronounced deprivation in well-being, and comprises many dimensions. It includes low incomes and the inability to acquire the basic goods and services necessary for survival with dignity. Poverty also encompasses low levels of health and education, poor access to clean water and sanitation, inadequate physical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacity and opportunity to better one’s life.”

So, in a way we can say that poverty is a denial of basic opportunities, a violation of human dignity for a decent living. It means not having sufficient to feed and clothe a family, but overall indicates not having enough money to go to clinic or school, not having enough to spend in recreational activities, these and many more. Yet again, poverty can be divided into two understanding; relative and absolute (this needs a further long explanation which has been avoided so as to make the essay comprehensive).

 
A number of factors or causes have been held responsible for poverty in the rural areas of India. So to say, it has been held that rural populations primarily depend on agriculture, which is highly dependent on rain patterns and the monsoon season. Climatic conditions like inadequate rain and improper irrigation facilities can obviously cause low, or in some cases, nil production of crops. On the top of it, the Indian family unit is often large, which can increase the effects of poverty. Also, the caste system which still prevails in most of the parts of India forms a major reason for rural poverty, for instance people from the lower casts are often deprived of the most basic facilities and opportunities. Like explained above, it has been commonly considered that the causes of poverty in India are caste system, and also India’s economic policies which are not effective, liberalization policies and their effects, rich Indians not generous enough, well all these reasons are being held responsible, but we cannot judge which of the reasons get the bigger blame.

Furthermore corruption is considered as one of the reason for poverty. In the sense, corruption in the public sector, the misuse of public office for private gain, is often held as a reason for aggravating conditions of poverty. Alternatively, countries experiencing chronic poverty are seen as natural blooming grounds for systemic corruption due to social and income inequalities and numerous economic incentives, sometimes the funds which are allocated for poverty alleviation schemes does not reach the targeted people. In addition, unemployment scenario among the youths in India which has always been quite severe may be one of the reasons. For with a huge population and slow growth of job opportunities, unemployment has been widespread in India. Plus large scale unemployment has led to several socio-economic problems like poverty, malnutrition, antisocial and criminal activities, drug and substance abuse, etc. The lack of proper unemployment insurance schemes has further widened this problem, thus it acts as an agent for poverty.


Although, several government schemes under the guidance of Planning Commission have been undertaken in India to tackle the problem of poverty like the other Five Year Plans, the Tenth Five Year Plan recognized that the economic growth cannot be the only aim of national planning and development objectives but needed to be defined not just in terms of increases in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or per capita income but in broader terms of improvement of human well being.  Although the Plan aimed at a growth target of eight per cent per annum, in order to mirror the significance of these dimension it also identified specific targets for a few key indicator of human development. Governmental Programmes like Integrated Rural Development Programme/Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, Jawahar Rozgar Yojana/ Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana, Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana, had been implemented in many states of India but the benefits of these programs are yet to bear fruits. Also, the Central government takes initiatives in antipoverty programs, as the constitution assigns responsibility to the states in a number of matters, like ownership; redistribution, improvement, and taxation of land. It seeks to establish programs and rules among the states and union territories, though implementation has often remained at the lower bureaucratic levels, and the achievements of such endeavours have been marginal. Likewise, State governments execute most central government programs concerned with land reform and the situation of small landless farmers. However, the question is how much the targeted groups have been benefited out of it.  

The Paradox and Challenges of Development in India
Though India may have abundant food grain stocks and ample foreign exchange reserves but still the poverty is prevalent and, this is the paradox of India’s development story. Debate on poverty in India has remained mostly in the domain of economists for poverty is defined in terms of income, expenditure and nutritional value (calorie intake).  But it is not more an issue to be tackled by the economist alone, social dimension of poverty should not be neglected while taking poverty eradication as an area of study. For poverty is more of social marginalization of an individual, household or group in the community/society rather than inadequacy of income to fulfill the basic needs. Indeed, inadequate income is therefore one of the factors of marginalization but not the sole factor. The goal of poverty alleviation programme should not only aim in increasing the income level of individual, household or group but main stream marginalized in the development process of the country. The country cannot claim for economic growth when a set of the people is marginalized to the periphery of the society.

The rapid economic growth process should accelerate the access to services like education and health services for all, especially the marginalized citizens. The link between ignorance and poverty and ill health and poverty are well-established. Diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea and malnutrition have been considered as disease of poverty. Having fallen ill due to poverty, the poor do not have the monetary means or resources to seek quality health care, for he/she does not have ways or means to borrow money for treatment of such life threatening diseases. Poverty therefore is a complex phenomenon of many dimensions not merely the economic dimension. Poverty alleviation programmes should address the issue of poverty from broader social and economic perspectives.

Conclusion
 
It is true that the fruits of economic growth have not benefited everyone uniformly. Some are left behind and some others are not touched by the benefits of economic growth. It is rightly been proved globally that the so-called trickledown effect (where everyone gets benefit- core to the periphery) does not work in all the societies and countries and India is no exception to this such phenomena. There are various reasons for this uneven development in the society, and we cannot sick on one of it, there may be technological reasons, sociological, political or economical reasons.

But whatever it is, to stimulate pro-poor agricultural growth and rural development, India will need to make some strategic choices. We should aim to propose actions in various necessary areas that can help the government to accelerate agricultural growth and reduce poverty, malnutrition, and unemployment quickly and on a sustainable basis. All of these reforms can be achieved with due regard for the well-being of the country’s rural poor in particular and of India in general.
             
 To end with, we can contemplate on what Amartya Sen had written, The removal of poverty, particularly of extreme poverty, calls for more participatory growth on a wide basis, which is not easy to achieve across the barriers of illiteracy, ill health, uncompleted land reforms and other sources of severe inequality. The process of economic advance cannot be divorced from the cultivation and enhancement of social opportunities over a broad front.”[3] And it in fact holds true, and we must act in unity to achieve such a gigantic task.
